About Us

*Brave New World Comics* was started with a large comics collection, a few card tables and a dream. Father and son team, Wade and Bud Wisinski, turned that winning combination into the first incarnation of Brave New World, in early 1990, and began building an empire. Not long after that, they made the decision to hire Atom! Freeman as their store manager and during those early, heady speculation crazed days, the team grew Brave New World into 3 store locations scattered throughout the Los Angeles area. But, as with most bubbles, the comics-as-investment craze popped taking two of those BNW locations with it. With a focus on customer service and the best possible selection of comics and fun, the Newhall location thrived was ready for Portlyn and Atom! Freeman to purchase it in May of 2000. They, in no particular order, remodeled the whole store, put a car in the middle of it, set a standard for other comic shops in promotional events and community outreach, and moved Brave New World to it’s current location.

Brave New World is committed to building a community of not only comics fans, but artists, families, gamers and geeks of all stripes. (Especially the stripy ones…)

*Atom! Freeman*

Atom! was born a poor child on the surface of Venus, where his indentured servant parents secretly worked an escape rocket made entirely of Venetian wood that would send the infant to earth. There, his superior powers of retail prowess and customer service skill would make him a god among men. The moonless nigth sky was completely black the night that the Wisinski men looked heavenward for a miracle to guide their business. Down came the wooden rocket, smashing on impact and revealing the answer to their prayers.

Or, if you’d rather, he was born in Ft Worth, Texas, moved to California on business, met Portlyn, worked as a sales rep for a comics publishing company and eventually purchased Brave New World.

Whatever you choose to believe, Atom! is an active member of several trade organizations, a devoted father and husband, and was named a judge in the 2008 Eisner Comic Book Industry Awards.
