Once again, Brave New World Comics in Newhall is proud to announce their participation in the worldwide comic book holiday event known as Free Comic Book DaySaturday, May 5^th. With even more free comics to choose from and fun things to do, this Free Comic Book Day promises to be the biggest yet!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is exactly what it sounds like: An annual international event aiming to putting a free comic book in the hands of anyone that wants to give this uniquely American art form a try. Everyone who visits Brave New World Comics on Saturday May 5^th will leave with some of comics’ greatest adventures. Absolutely FREE! With super-hero and adventure stories from STAR WARS, CONAN, THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES, X-MEN, SPIDER-MAN and TRANSFORMERS, family favorites like ARCHIE COMICS and UNCLE SCROOGE, comedy stories from THE SIMPSONS and AMELIA RULES and even Japanese “Manga” publishers TOKYOPOP and CMX SNEAK PEEK books, Brave New World feels confident that they have something for everyone.

This year, Brave New World Comics has arranged to give away more than 9,000 free comics directly to local schools and libraries, in their ongoing effort to promote literacy through comic books and graphic novels. “Anything that gets kids reading is a valuable tool,” says Portlyn, one of Brave New World’s owners, “and comics are great for eager readers as well as reluctant ones”. As part of the Free Comic Book Day festivities, Brave New World will be keeping track of what area schools have the greatest attendance at the event, and will make a comic book and graphic novel donation to the library of that school. Additionally, BNW offers free comics and resource guides to educators year round, and provides educational programming to schools and libraries at no cost.

Along with some awesome surprises and thousands of free comics to give away, Brave New World is also offering Free Art Classes, taught by professional animators and comic book artists in their Loft @ BNW classroom, as well as free demos of the exciting superhero themed tabletop game HEROCLIX all day. Comic book creators, artists, and writers will also be on hand to sign their latest works, talk about the comics that they have helped create, and possibly even step in to teach a class or two. There will also be exciting photo opportunities as the 501^st Storm Trooper Squadron’s Los Angeles Garrison entertains the crowds with replica costumes of your favorite Star Wars characters. “But, don’t sleep in too late,” warned Atom!, Brave New World’s proprietor of pugnacious punctuation, “if Free Comic Book Day 6 is anything like the first five, the free comics could run out before the crowd does….but the fun is here all day!”
